There’s a point in September when you just feel it.
We might still be clinging onto the odd bit of sunshine here in Scotland, but the mornings are sharper, the evenings are definitely darker and suddenly having the lamps on at 7pm doesn’t feel quite so ridiculous.
And I LOVE it.
This is the time of year when I start wanting home to feel different too. Not redecorated. Not covered in pumpkins. Just warmer, cosier and somewhere you genuinely want to shut the door on the world and stay for the night.
And for me, home fragrance is one of the easiest ways to do it.
The switch to autumn home fragrance
I don't think there needs to be a specific date when the summer candles disappear and the autumn candles and diffusers come out.
It happens naturally.
You start reaching less for the really fresh, bright scents and suddenly the woody, spicy, deeper fragrances smell absolutely gorgeous again.
It's sandalwood. Musk. Pine. Berries. Warm spice. Coffee.
Basically, all the scents that make coming home on a cold evening feel that wee bit better.
And apparently we're not alone - warm woods, spices, coffee, amber and musk are all appearing prominently in autumn home-fragrance coverage this year.
And that brings me to Winter Grace…
This Friday sees the return of one of our most-loved seasonal fragrances: Winter Grace.
Despite the name, I've always thought Winter Grace is perfect for this bit before winter too.
It has pine and berry, softened with musk, so it has that gorgeous crisp woodland feel without screaming Christmas. Think cold walks, changing trees, scarves coming back out -followed by getting home, shutting the door and warming up.
Fresh enough for September. Cosy enough for what’s coming.
And I've been doing a little quality control of my own…
I put a Winter Grace diffuser in our lounge about a month ago and it has genuinely blown me away. Every time I walk into the room I can smell it. Not overpowering, just this beautiful background fragrance that makes the whole room feel lovely.
And it's still going beautifully.

Then there’s Fresh Coffee…
Now, Fresh Coffee isn't technically an autumn fragrance at JoJo Co. We love it all year round.
But oh my goodness, it comes into its own at this time of year.
There is something about clearing up after dinner, lighting the Fresh Coffee candle, pouring a glass of red and sitting down when it's already completely dark outside that just WORKS.
It gives you that gorgeous smell of freshly brewed coffee without actually having to drink one at 8pm - probably sensible at my age.
And if you're trying to make your home smell cosy for autumn, coffee is one of those fragrances that instantly adds warmth. Coffee is also appearing alongside woods, spice, amber and musk in current autumn fragrance guides.
Making home somewhere you want to be
I think that's really what cosy season is about.
It doesn't need a complete interiors overhaul or a house full of seasonal decorations.
Put the lamps on. Find the blanket that's been shoved away since May. Light a candle after dinner. Put a diffuser somewhere you'll notice it every time you walk past.
Open the window for ten minutes and let that properly cold Scottish air in - then shut it again immediately because you've remembered you live in Scotland.
Little things.
Summer is brilliant because we're always trying to get out of the house.
But there's something really lovely about reaching the point in the year when staying in starts to feel like coming home.
And I think we're just about there. 🤎
