I tend to take it for granted that people know all the things they need to know about getting the most from our lovely products but of course that isn’t always the case so here I am writing a wee blog if you want to know!
There’s nothing quite like the soft glow of a JoJo Co. candle or the gentle scent of our signature diffuser floating through your home. Whether you're unwinding after a long day, setting the mood for a cosy dinner, or simply creating a moment of calm, your candle or diffuser should work hard to deliver that luxury experience every time.
But did you know a few simple tips can help you get even more from your JoJo Co. favourites? Here’s how to love and care for your candle and diffuser - so they last longer, smell stronger, and keep your space feeling like home.
The First Burn: Set the Stage
Your candle’s first burn is its most important. When you light your candle for the first time, make sure it burns long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the jar - usually around 2 to 4 hours. This prevents tunnelling and sets a strong, even burn pattern for the future. A ‘fancy’ way to say this is to say this, “setting the candles memory”.
I know some of your like to take your time and make your candles last but be careful of cutting that first burn.
Did you know? – Soy wax burns longer...so a 2-3 burn on a first burn will barely put a dent in your gorgeous candle.
Trim to Win
Before each next burn, trim your candle wick but not too short! A short, trimmed wick means a cleaner flame, less smoke, and a safer, more even burn. Plus, it prevents that little "mushroom cap" you sometimes see on the wick after burning. I always explain this as getting rid of the black chunky bit (you know what I mean).
JoJo Tip: Invest in a pair of wick trimmers – you'll have them forever! Scissors are fine but they just don’t cut it (ha ha) - especially when your candle is way down at its final burn!
Burn Time Matters
To get the most out of your JoJo Co. candle, burn it for 1 to 4 hours at a time. This keeps the wax pool even and prevents the wick from shifting. Avoid burning your candle right to the very bottom - it’s a fire risk and can damage the vessel.
And always keep your candle away from draughts, direct sunlight, and radiators. These can cause uneven burning or make the scent evaporate faster.
JoJo Tip: If you have a decent amount of wax left at the bottom of your jar then you can scrape it out and melt on a wax burner to get the last of your gorgeous scent.
Diffuser Diaries: The Low-Maintenance Luxury
If candles are for moments, diffusers are for the everyday. And with a little care, they’ll keep your home smelling fresh for weeks.

Location is key: Place your diffuser in a high-traffic area like a hallway or bathroom. The air circulation helps disperse the fragrance naturally.

Flip the reeds: Every week or two, give the reeds a flip to refresh the scent. Just do it over a sink or tissue to catch any drips.

Avoid heat sources: Don’t put your diffuser near a window, radiator, or heater. Heat makes the oil evaporate more quickly, shortening its lifespan.

Store with Care
Whether you're rotating seasonal scents or saving your favourites for later, storing your JoJo Co. candles and diffusers properly makes a big difference:

Keep them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Store with the lid on (if it has one) to protect the scent.

Rotate fragrances to keep things feeling fresh and intentional.
And a gentle reminder: never leave a candle burning unattended. Even the best-behaved candles need a little supervision.
Why We Don’t Offer Refills or Jar Returns
We get asked this all the time - and we love that you're thinking about sustainability! Here's the honest truth:
1. We're a small team
Managing returned jars and sterilising them for reuse just isn’t something we can handle (yet!). As much as we’d love to offer a refill service, the logistics would take more resources than we currently have.2. Diffuser refills aren’t as simple as they seem
Because our diffusers last so long - often over six months - a refill would still need to include:

A brand new glass bottle (we’d never use plastic!)

A completely fresh set of reeds (old ones just don’t perform the same)
So even though it’s called a “refill,” it’s essentially a new product — without any real cost or environmental savings.
3. It’s okay to refresh your space
By the time you're ready for a top-up, your bottle might be ready for a style refresh too. Our designs change with the seasons and evolve with your home.
JoJo Tip: Recycle or Reuse Like a Pro

Recycle: Wax rinses out easily with hot, soapy water. Pop your clean glass jars and diffuser bottles into your regular household glass recycling.

Reuse: Give them a second life! I love adding dried flowers to our diffuser bottles and placing them in little corners of the home that need a gentle lift.

Repurpose: Our candle jars make gorgeous homes for cotton buds, hair ties, stationery, or even a succulent – both my teenage girls have them all over there rooms for the zillions of things they have in there!
