There’s something uniquely Scottish about whisky. Not just the rich amber spirit itself, but the centuries of tradition, craftsmanship, and story that swirl around every dram. At JoJo Co., we’ve captured that essence - without needing an ice-cold glass to hand. Our “Whisky Old Fashioned” candle (and diffuser) is crafted to evoke that same warmth, depth, and unmistakable character.
This scent was born out of a collaboration with a whisky distillery - a truly eye-opening experience that gave me a newfound respect for whisky. Although I never considered myself a whisky drinker, working closely with distillers and investors in the craft opened my senses. With guidance from a whisky expert (and a respected whisky writer from a leading Scottish newspaper), we experimented, refined, and finally created “Whisky Old Fashioned.” To my surprise - I actually began to enjoy the taste, too.
The result? A fragrance that transports you to a cosy Scottish parlour: smoky oak casks, subtle vanilla sweetness, a hint of bitters and citrus - all wrapped in the slow-burning magic of soy wax and soft cotton wick.
Whisky, Scotland & Why It Resonates
Scotch whisky isn’t just a drink - it’s woven into Scotland’s identity. Distilling in Scotland dates back to at least 1494, when records first mention “aqua vitae” - the water of life. Over centuries, whisky evolved from a raw medicinal spirit to the refined, world-renowned drink we know today, aged in oak, matured with care, and respected globally.
But whisky’s appeal isn’t just history or tradition. It’s the atmosphere: the slow pour, the soft glow of candlelight, the smoky warmth rising from a glass. That atmosphere inspired our candle. Lighting “Whisky Old Fashioned” isn’t about pretending to drink whisky - it’s about evoking that feeling of cosy indulgence, heritage, and slow-living.
As one memorable quote puts it:
“There is no bad whiskey. There are only some whiskeys that aren’t as good as others.” - Raymond Chandler
We like to think every burn of “Whisky Old Fashioned” proves that even better: there is no bad fragrance, only some scents that aren’t as rich, as layered, or as characterful.
A Nod to Scotland’s Whisky Voices - Featuring Rosalind Erskine
When creating this scent, I found guidance and inspiration in the writings of Rosalind Erskine - food and drink editor and whisky writer for The Scotsman.
In one of her pieces, she reflects on coming “late” to whisky - not through upbringing, but simply because whisky once wasn’t her drink of choice. Over time, as her appreciation grew, so did her respect not just for the dram in the glass, but for the craft, tradition, and culture behind it.
That change of heart - from hesitant sceptic to true appreciator - mirrors my own journey when working with the distillery. Her writing captures the romance of Scotch: the heritage, the flavours, the soul. I wanted that romance to live in “Whisky Old Fashioned,” so that whether you know whisky or not, lighting the candle brings a little bit of that love, history, and warmth into your home.
Why “Whisky Old Fashioned” Works - Candle and Luxury Diffuser
-
Complexity & Depth: Like a well-aged Scotch, this scent evolves as it burns - smoky oak, sweet vanilla, subtle spice, citrus hints - revealing new layers over time.
-
Atmosphere & Mood: The combination of soy wax, slow burn, and that whisky-inspired fragrance transforms a room like a well-lit dram can transform a moment: cosy, intimate, indulgent.
-
Versatility: It’s not only a candle. Our luxury diffuser version brings the scent into daily life - from evenings at home to weekends by the fire. It’s perfect for those who love the whisky vibe but want a gentler, alcohol-free way to enjoy it.
-
Authenticity: This is a scent born from real collaboration with a distillery - informed by experts - not a generic “whisky-style” knock-off. It carries heritage, care, and respect for Scotland’s national drink.
