Can I be honest?
Because I work in fragrance, I probably take this a little bit for granted.
My home smells good.
Not in an overpowering, “walked into a department store fragrance hall” kind of way. Just fresh. Lifted. Clean. Lovely to walk back into.
And then it hit me recently - that’s probably not normal.
Because homes, however clean they are, are actually battling a lot.
Dogs.
Teenagers.
Bins.
Bathrooms.
Last night’s dinner.
Wet towels.
Shoes dumped in hallways.
That strange “closed-up house” smell when you’ve been out all day.
And none of that means your house is dirty.
It just means… life.
Why does my house smell bad even when it’s clean?
Honestly? This is one of the most relatable home questions ever.
You can clean the kitchen.
Wipe the worktops.
Hoover.
Open a window.
And still wonder:
Why does my house still smell a bit… off?
Usually, it’s because scent lingers where we stop noticing it.
Cooking is a huge one.
Garlic.
Fish.
A steak dinner.
A Sunday fry-up.
Even toast somehow manages to hang around.
Then add pets.
I adore my dog, but let’s not pretend dogs smell like fresh linen. Dog beds are a hassle to wash frequently and so are dogs!
Bathrooms quietly collect moisture and stale air.
Teenage bedrooms… I’m saying no more.
Laundry rooms can get musty.
And if you’ve ever gone away for a few days and walked back into your own house?
You’ll know exactly what I mean.
My home fragrance routine
So here’s my confession.
Every morning, I do a little fragrance walk-round.
Yes, really.
I flip my diffusers, lift the lids off a couple of candles for a gentle scent throw, and depending on what’s going on in the house, light something fresh.
And honestly?
It makes such a difference.
At the moment:
Orange Bloom lives in some of my bathrooms because it’s bright, uplifting and instantly makes the room feel fresh.
Coast is brilliant in those airy spaces where you just want that clean, fresh, coastal lift.
Grapefruit & Mangosteen is currently in my kitchen diner and it absolutely works there - juicy, vibrant, fresh.
Rocks & Roses sits in my hallway, because first impressions matter.
And in my living room, I’ve got one of our Secret Scents quietly doing its thing (I love the Eden Diffuser).
Am I extra?
Probably.
But when people walk in and instantly say:
“Oh my goodness, your house smells amazing…”
I’m not mad about it.
Top tip: Flip your diffusers before leaving the house
Honestly - try this.
Flip your diffuser reeds before heading out.
Go to work.
Go shopping.
Do the school run.
Head out for lunch.
Then come back.
That fresh burst of fragrance lifts the whole space, and walking into a beautifully scented home genuinely changes how it feels.
Tiny effort.
Big payoff.
One scent throughout your whole home? Very classy.
Now - I should say this.
I know loads of our customers do the exact opposite of me.
Our Pink Spice lovers especially.
And honestly? I completely get it.
Pink Spice is our signature scent for a reason.
We even joke about the Pink Spice fan club because once people fall for it, that’s it.
They want it in every room.
They gift it to friends.
They want their home to smell like them.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
If anything?
Having one beautiful signature scent flowing through your whole home is incredibly chic.
I’m just clearly incapable of choosing.
The instant fix for cooking smells? Fresh Coffee.
This one deserves its own section.
If I’ve cooked something particularly enthusiastic - steak, fish, garlic-heavy pasta, Sunday breakfast - I clean up and immediately reach for Fresh Coffee.
Every single time.
That warm, fresh coffee shop scent just cuts through lingering food smells in the nicest possible way.
And if you love that vibe all the time?
Our Fresh Coffee diffuser gives exactly that cosy coffee shop atmosphere permanently.
Fun fact: we’ve sold loads of these to people styling homes for sale because apparently buyers love a coffee-house feel.
Makes perfect sense.
Need an instant fragrance boost? Room sprays are your best friend.
Sometimes you don’t want to light a candle.
Sometimes your diffusers are quietly doing their thing in the background.
And sometimes… you just need your house to smell amazing immediately.
That’s where our home sprays come in.
I use ours all the time.
One of my favourite little habits is giving a few sprays from the top of the stairs, which lets the fragrance gently drift through the landing and downstairs without feeling overpowering.
It’s such a simple thing, but it instantly lifts the whole house.
Perfect if:
- visitors are on their way
- you’ve just cooked
- the dog has had a moment 😅
- the house needs a quick refresh
- or you just want that “my life is together” feeling in under 10 seconds
Honestly? So underrated.
Bedroom fragrance? Less is more.
Could you have a diffuser in the bedroom?
Absolutely.
But personally, I like bedroom fragrance to feel softer.
That’s actually why I think our Aurora candles are perfect for bedrooms.
Because they don’t come with lids, you can simply leave them styled beautifully in the room and enjoy that gentle touch of fragrance without even lighting them if you want to.
It feels effortless, elegant, and never overpowering.
I do also keep a diffuser in my ensuite, which means the scent softly drifts through into the bedroom naturally.
That combination works beautifully.
Going on holiday? Don’t come home to stale air.
This is one people forget.
If someone’s popping in to water the plants or check the house while you’re away…
Why not leave your diffusers doing their thing?
There is honestly nothing nicer than coming home, opening the front door, and being greeted by a fresh, beautiful scent rather than stale air and suitcase sadness.
So… does your house smell bad?
Probably not.
But could it smell better?
Almost definitely.
And the funny thing is, once you get used to living in a beautifully scented home, there’s no going back.
Ask me how I know.
