When people buy one of our candles, they usually see the finished product.
A beautifully scented candle sitting on a shelf, ready to take home.
What they don't see is everything that happened before that candle was ever ready to be lit.
I've often thought it's a part of our business that quietly goes unnoticed, so I thought I'd take you behind the scenes and show you what really goes into creating a handmade candle.
It Always Starts With The Fragrance
For me, the fragrance is everything.
Before we even think about pouring wax, we spend time choosing scents that feel beautiful, balanced and timeless.
Not every fragrance makes the cut.
Some smell wonderful in a bottle but completely change once they're burning.
Others simply don't feel like JoJo Co.
If we don't absolutely love it, we won't use it.
Every Candle Is Poured By Hand
This is probably the biggest difference between handmade and mass-produced candles.
Every JoJo Co. candle is hand-poured here in our Scottish studio.
The wax is carefully measured.
The fragrance is blended in at exactly the right temperature.
Every wick is centred by hand.
Nothing is rushed because rushing usually leads to mistakes.
There's something incredibly satisfying about seeing shelves filled with freshly poured candles, knowing every single one has been made with care.
Then Comes The Waiting
One of the things people don't always realise is that candles can't simply be poured and sold.
They need time.
After pouring, each candle is left to cure properly before it's ready to burn.
It's one of those invisible parts of candle making that nobody really sees, but it makes a huge difference to how the candle performs.
Sometimes the best part of making candles is simply having the patience to let them become their best.
It's The Little Details That Matter
Once the candles are ready, every label is carefully applied by hand.
Every candle is checked.
Every lid is fitted.
Every box is assembled.
Every order is wrapped with exactly the same care as if we were sending it to a friend.
Those little details might seem small on their own, but together they're what create the JoJo Co. experience.
Handmade Means Real People
One of the things I'm most proud of is that we're still a genuinely small business.
When you order from us, your candle hasn't travelled through huge production lines or enormous warehouses.
It has passed through the hands of real people.
Usually mine, Neil's or one of our wonderful team.
We know the products because we've made them.
We know the fragrances because we've tested them.
We genuinely care about every parcel that leaves our studio.
Why Handmade Costs More
People often ask why handmade products cost more than something they can pick up in a supermarket.
The honest answer is because handmade simply takes time.
Time to test fragrances.
Time to pour.
Time to cure.
Time to label.
Time to wrap.
Time to check that everything leaving our studio is something we're proud to put our name on.
There aren't any shortcuts.
And to be honest, I wouldn't want there to be.

So yes, handmade candles do take longer to make.
They do cost a little more.
But behind every JoJo Co. candle is time, craftsmanship, patience and a small team who genuinely love what they do.
And I think that's something worth keeping alive.
